I would differ as to his price paid for coming to the ultimate west. He became the star of hope for those in MiddleEarth, he participated in "The War of Wrath" and defeated the great dragon Morgoth sent against the Elves and forces of the west. He was reunited with Elwing who also came to the west. His sons, given the choice of being counted among the elves or among men, became great in their own right: One became Master Elrond and became counted as among the elves, the other became the first king of Numenor and the forefather of Isildor's heirs, the last of which, was Aragorn.
